Florence County hunters shoot more bucks than a year ago

FLORENCE, Wis. — Hunters in Florence County shot 106 more bucks than a year ago on the opening weekend of Wisconsin’s nine-day gun deer season.
That’s according to preliminary data the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources released Tuesday.
Florence County hunters registered 627 antlered deer from Saturday through Sunday, compared with 521 during opening weekend in 2016. Florence County’s total opening weekend harvest was 955 deer, up from 556 a year ago.
That improved success went against a statewide trend.
This past weekend’s harvest in Wisconsin was 102,903 deer, down nearly 14,000 from a year ago, or 11.8 percent, according to the DNR’s preliminary data. The statewide total included 59,142 bucks, down by nearly 5,700 from last year.
DNR officials say rain and high winds in the southern part of the state likely kept harvest numbers down.
Marinette County’s preliminary figures for opening weekend are about the same as a year ago. This year’s harvest was 1,569 deer, including 1,279 bucks, compared with 1,546 in 2016, which included 1,292 bucks.
Forest County’s total harvest was up from a year ago, climbing to 746 deer, or 190 more than in 2016. That total included 579 bucks, compared with 545 last year.
