KINGSFORD — The KHS Music Booster Club has donated funds to develop a scholarship to honor the memory of the late Don “Holmzy” Holmes. The music boosters have worked with the family to recognize and celebrate the passion that “Holmzy” had for the music program at Kingsford High School.

Being an “honorary member” of the KHS marching band was something that Holmes was very proud of. He was always on hand to make repairs to instruments or to help out at the parades, night shows, and concerts, as well as many other performances.

As remembered by many, his greatest pleasure was taking part in the execution of the annual Night Show performance put on by the KHS band. He always found a plan for putting together an awesome pyrotechnic display as part of the halftime show each year.

He was a very special man that has shared his talents and left a mark on the many students he worked with throughout the years he spent involved in the KHS music program. To some, he was the guy that helped out behind the scenes, but to many he will always be remembered for his passion, talent, and caring nature shown to and shared with all those he came in contact with.

The Don Holmes Memorial Scholarship will first be awarded to a Kingsford High School graduate in the Class of 2018. Applicants for the scholarship must be enrolled in the music programs at KHS, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, and submit the completed application and an essay explaining how music has played a part in their life and how they plan to incorporate music in their future.

The Board of Education of Breitung Township Schools and the administration of Kingsford High School are pleased to accept the opportunity to coordinate such a worthwhile scholarship for the Holmes family, the Kingsford Music Boosters, and the graduates of Kingsford High School.

Individuals interested in donating to the “Don Holmes Memorial Scholarship” Fund can contact Rita Edberg, Scholarship Coordinator/KHS, or Lyle Smithson, Principal, 431 Hamilton Ave. Kingsford, MI 49802 or by calling 906-779-2670, ext. 5 for more information.
