YMCA campaign for pool upgrade, other improvements nears goal
THE NORTHERN LIGHTS YMCA Dickinson Center is $200,000 away from reaching its Capital Campaign goal. The public portion of the campaign has raised more than $400,000 since Jan. 25.
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Northern Lights YMCA Capital Campaign to upgrade its aging pool and renovate its the Crystal Lake Community Center facilities has raised more than $400,000 in seven weeks.
“We’ve had tremendous success so far, but the work is not done,” Center Director Jonathan Ringel said. “We not only want to reach our goal, we want to shatter it. The response from the community has been overwhelming, and if that continues, we’ll be able to do even more to transform the building and ensure the future of the YMCA in Dickinson County.”
The YMCA launched a final push to raise $650,000 on Jan. 25 after a low-key two-year campaign that generated about $1.8 million of its $2.4 million goal.
Some of the major contributions included $150,000 from M.J. Electric and CCI Systems, and $125,000 from BOSS Snowplow and The Toro Company.
That leaves about $200,000 left, with the campaign set to extend through June. So far, nearly 150 individuals and businesses have donated to the Capital Campaign.
All donors who pledge $500 or more will receive permanent recognition in the building.
The $2.4 million plateau would guarantee the YMCA can completely replace and modernize the pool in what would the first phase of a master improvement plan. New fitness equipment and other upgrades to the nearly 50-year-old building also is included in that initial estimate.
Additional upgrades will be added if the YMCA exceeds its goal. The master vision for the facility includes the potential for multiple phases of improvement, depending on total funding. The ultimate vision includes a multi-purpose fieldhouse with indoor running track, but that would require an additional $5 million beyond the phase one goal.
“Everything we do and will do at this YMCA depends on what the community wants to support,” Ringel said. “It’s been a remarkable two months so far, and we’re excited to see what the next few months bring.”
Renovations are slated to begin in the fall, with the pool project being done in summer 2019. Donations to the campaign can be made by calling 906-774-4076 or going online to www.WhatsYourY.org.
