Bike safety class held with Florence third graders
The Florence third grade classes of Tracie Johnson and Mary Derwinski participated in a bike safety class by Florence County Sheriff’s Department Officer Teresa Chrisman and Annette Seibold from the Health Department. Mason Koski was the winner of a bike and helmet.
FLORENCE, Wis. — Will you or your child be riding a bike soon? Riding a bike has so many benefits. It is fun, provides easy transportation, good exercise and families can enjoy time together.
The Florence County Health Department wants kids and families to increase physical activity and do it safely in the upcoming warmer months.
Most bike injuries can be avoided by wearing a helmet. A bike helmet is the single most effective safety device available to reduce head injury and death for bicycle crashes.
Other important bike tips were shared through the annual bike safety class on May 10 coordinated by the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and Health Department with third graders at the Florence Elementary School. Officer Teresa Chrisman also explained using hand signals and rules of the road. Participants were encouraged to wear bright colors and perform a bike safety check to assure proper working order.
Health officer, Annette Seibold, gave a demonstration on the correct way to adjust a bike helmet for the best fit and maximum safety. Mason Koski was the lucky winner of a bicycle and helmet provided by the Health Department.
Child bicycle helmet promotion programs is a scientifically supported strategy to increase community safety according to “What Works for Health” by UW Population Health.
