IM names top seniors for 2018

OLIVIA BERUTTI
IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain High School has announced six valedictorians and a salutatorian for the Class of 2018, all maintaining exemplary academic records with a 4.0 grade-point average.
Sharing the honors are Olivia A. Berutti, Claire E. Czernek, Roman J. Knapp, Michael P. Kulas, Lindsay M. Morel and Caleb R. Plumley. Miranda M. Julian has been named the salutatorian of the class.
Olivia A. Berutti is the daughter of Susan Jacobs and Thomas Berutti of Iron Mountain. She is a two-year member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society, has earned a place on the honor roll for seven consecutive semesters, has earned the Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award and is a four-year Honors’ Celebration attendee. Berutti also has been extremely active in student council and now is president. She has honed her leadership skills in this role and also as the IMHS Girls’ State delegate in her junior year. She participated in Key Club, Youth Advisory Council, Tri-Hi-Y Club Varsity Club, Environmental Club, track and field and competitive cheerleading. She previously earned the U.S. Air Force Math and Science Award and recently was awarded the American Legion Best All-School Girl Citizenship award, the MHSAA Scholar Athlete award, the MSAA Volunteer Award for completing 400 hours of community service and the MTU Women in Engineering Certificate of Merit.
Berutti has earned as well the President’s Education award, the IMHS Civics Departmental award, along with the IMHS Spanish Departmental award. She was recently recognized as a Red Cord blood donor, meeting the requirements of blood donation with the U.P. Regional Blood Center while in high school. She plans to study psychiatry at Albion College.
Claire E. Czernek is the daughter of Elizabeth and William Czernek of Iron Mountain. She is also a two-year member of the IMHS Honor Society, has earned a place on the honor roll for seven consecutive semesters, has earned the Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award and is a four-year Honors’ Celebration attendee. Czernek has participated in Tri-Hi-Y, Environmental Club, YAC, Varsity Club, Publications, Varsity Club and Key Club. She also was a four-year member of the volleyball team.

CLAIRE CZERNEK
She was named the Math Student of the Month, the IMHS Student of the Week and named HOSA Regional Finalist for two years. She also earned the Certificate of Proficiency in Health and Science. Most recently, Czernek received the Bruce Spigarelli Senior Citizenship award and the MSSA Volunteer award, recognizing she completed 400 hours of community service.
She has been extremely involved in the local community as well, doing various volunteer activities. Czernek plans to study biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison this fall.
Roman J. Knapp is the son of Cassandra and Eric Dykhuis of Kingsford. Knapp has earned a place on the honor roll for seven consecutive semesters. He has also been invited to attend the IMHS Honors’ Celebration for the past four years. He has earned the Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award, was named the IMHS Math Student of the Month and the IMHS Student of the Week. He enjoyed participating in the Quiz Bowl and also takes part in violin, guitar and music. Knapp recently earned the President’s Education Award along with the Senior Social Studies Departmental Award. He was also recognized as a Red Cord Blood donor.
Knapp plans to pursue creative writing and literature at the University of Michigan.
Michael P. Kulas is the son of Kathy and Greg Kulas of Iron Mountain. He has participated in varsity soccer, varsity basketball and track. He is very involved in the music program and is a member of the IMHS jazz band. He has participated in the Northern Michigan University Jazz Festival and the Menominee River Conference Honors Band. He is a two-year member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society, a four-year Honors’ Celebration attendee and has earned the Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award. Recently, Kulas was named the 2018 U.S. Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Band award recipient, an MHSAA Scholar Athlete award, the President’s Education Award and earned the Senior Business Departmental Award.

MIRANDA JULIAN
Outside of school, Kulas keeps himself busy with volunteering, soccer, running, hiking and reading. He plans to study engineering this fall at Michigan Technological University.
Lindsay M. Morel is the daughter of Michelle and Gustavo Morel of Iron Mountain. Morel has taken on a leadership role in the creation of the Iron Mountain Career Launch program, serving as a student ambassador. She also was team captain for the First Robotics Team. She is a positive role model, tutoring students in fifth through 12th grades for the past two years. She has participated in varsity tennis and varsity cheerleading all four years, track and field for two years, along with competitive dance. Morel is a two-year member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society, has earned the Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award and is a four-year Honors’ Celebration attendee. She has earned the MTU Women in Engineering Certificate of Merit, named the Wendy’s High School Heisman school winner and most recently, earned the 2018 U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence award.
Morel has also earned a President’s Education award, the Senior Science Departmental Award, along with the Silver Medal Level Art/Writing Award. Outside of the classroom, Morel is a talented photographer and has volunteered countless hours of her time collaborating on a children’s book. She plans to study aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan this fall.
Caleb R. Plumley is the son of Janet and Andy Plumley of Iron Mountain. He is a two-year member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society, has earned the Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award and is a four-year Honors’ Celebration attendee. He was also named the Wendy’s High School Heisman school winner. During his junior year, he served as the IMHS Boys’ State delegate and was named a national finalist in the Samsung American Legion Scholarship competition. Plumley has participated in swim team, being named the MVP twice, varsity soccer, track, Key Club, Environmental Club, Quiz Bowl and Youth in Government. Most recently, Plumley earned the President’s Education award, along with the Senior Mathematics Departmental Award. In his spare time, he works as a Northern Stars soccer referee and an NRA apprentice instructor.
Plumley plans to study mechanical engineering and psychology at a University of Wisconsin college.

ROMAN KNAPP
Miranda M. Julian, the daughter of Sheila and Paul Julian of Iron Mountain, has been named class salutatorian. She is a two-year member of the Iron Mountain High School Honor Society, has earned the Iron Mountain High School Academic Excellence Award and is a four-year Honors’ Celebration attendee.
During her junior year, Julian was named the U.S. Army Pro Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence Finalist. She has participated in several leadership events, including the Wisconsin Leadership Seminar, National Youth Leadership Forum, Presidential Inauguration Leadership Seminar, Youth Summit and Collective Bargaining. She has earned the Society of Torch and Laurel Award and the National Society of High School Scholars Award. She has also been active in basketball, tennis, golf, Key Club, Varsity Club, Tri-Hi-Y, Environmental Club and Mathletes. She has volunteered more than 400 hours in our community, earning the MSSA Volunteer award.
Just recently, Julian earned the President’s Education Award and was also recognized as a Red Cord Blood donor.
She plans to attend St. Norbert College this fall.
