Heavy overnight rains prompt flash flood alert

A flash flood alert was issued today through late this morning for northeast Dickinson County after parts of the area received more than 3 inches of rain overnight, according to officials with the National Weather Service office in Negaunee.

As of 9 a.m., the office had rainfall totals from Dickinson County and Iron County that included 3.6 inches at Randville; 1.64 at Ford Airport in Kingsford; 1.28 in Norway; 2.07 about two miles north of Norway; and 3.52 inches in Stambaugh.

The wastewater treatment plant in Kingsford recorded 3.15 inches of rain.

Jim Salzwedel, observations program leader at the NWS Marquette office, said the northern counties such as Marquette and Alger got even more rain that continued overnight, prompting the early morning flash flood alert.

Salzwedel also stated no flooding had yet been reported this morning.
