LaFave wins second state House term

BEAU LAFAVE

Iron Mountain’s Beau LaFave secured a second two-year term Tuesday in the state House as District 108 representative.

The Republican easily bested his Democratic rival, Bob Romps of Escanaba, by a vote of 21,914 to 13,691 with 100 percent of the precincts reporting. The district represents Dickinson, Delta and Menominee counties.

In Dickinson County, LaFave garnered 7,599 votes to 3,752 for Romps.

The 26-year-old incumbent was a political newcomer when first elected in 2016, taking time off from attending college to run for office.

Romps, 59, is LST/transportation coordinator at Pathways Mental Health and president of UAW Local 2172 for the past 15 years.

In the other area House race, Republican Gregory Markkanen edged Democrat Ken Summers to win the open District 110 seat, 17,980 to 17,401. He succeeds Democrat Scott Dianda, who lost Tuesday night to Ed McBroom in the District 38 state Senate race.

The 110th District includes Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties, plus Ishpeming and Powell Townships in Marquette County.

Markkanen is a history, civics, and geography teacher for Baraga Area Schools and a Hancock City Council member. Summers lives in L’Anse and is a self-employed trader.
