Searchers find lost Republic man

MARQUETTE — A Republic man who became lost Tuesday night in a wooded area of Republic Township was found safe by searchers after he placed a 911 call to the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

Gary Waterman, 64, who was hiking north of Chief Lake Road, called to report his dilemma at about 7 p.m. The sheriff’s office was able to get a GPS location from the call and relayed the information to searchers. He was located a short time later.

Waterman did not need medical attention, deputies said.

The sheriff’s office, along with Marquette County Search and Rescue, would like to remind individuals going into the woods to be prepared in case they become lost. A fully charged cell phone, fire starters, GPS, compass, and flashlight are all helpful items. If you become lost and are able to call 911, stay in that location. Dispatch will be able to get a GPS coordinate from the call and relay it to searchers.
