Jazz group plays Friday at the Crystal Theatre

CRYSTAL FALLS — The audience of Crystal Theatre will be introduced to a unique style of jazz by a group with a unique name at 7 p.m. Friday.

Named after the European jazz guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt, Djangophonique is an award-winning quintet that delivers joyful, genuine gypsy jazz.

Gypsy or manouche jazz is the music of the Romani people, who have their origins in northern India but today live mostly in Europe.

Djangophonique has been described as “the cleanest, most genuine manouche jazz that can be heard in Michigan.”

Led by guitarist Andrew Brown, the project has cultivated a community of musicians who channel the agility that the music demands.

In 2022, with Tyler Rindo on clarinet and Jorian Olk-Szost on double-bass, the group released their first studio album titled “Introducing Djangophonique.”

The album earned them Artist of the Year at WYCE-FM radio station’s annual showcase honoring West Michigan’s premier music talents.

In 2023, Nicholas Martin joined the ensemble on rhythm guitar. The group began a new chapter with the addition of vocalist Katie Smith, whose soulful approach creates the mystery and appeal of this unique style of music.

Advanced tickets can be purchased online at thecrystaltheatre.org, by calling 906-875-3208 or in person from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at Stage Left.
