Fire that killed former Norway man investigated

KALAMAZOO — Authorities in Kalamazoo continue to investigate a Feb. 3 fire that claimed the life of a former Norway man.

The body of Zachariah John Hayes, 31, was found by Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responding to an early morning fire on the 400 block of Wallace Avenue, the Kalamazoo Gazette reported.

Hayes had moved to Kalamazoo a few years ago to help his family maintain rental properties, according to police.

KDPS detectives were working with the fire marshal to determine the cause of the fire, but they do consider it suspicious, the newspaper said. Officers were seeking the public’s help to find a person of interest, a 32-year-old woman who was last seen leaving the home before it caught fire.

Detectives told WWMT-TV that moments before flames broke out, the woman and a man were seen leaving the home by an eyewitness. Police said the man was questioned and released.
