North Dickinson in need of a bus

FELCH TOWNSHIP — The North Dickinson County School District needs a new used school bus.

Its backup bus has deteriorated to the point it is not worth repairing and must be replaced, said Darrell Oman, director of support services.

While the district has enough buses to take care of its transportation needs right now, it has nothing to turn to if one of its regular buses fails.

Oman will look at several used buses available to see what might be the best fit for the district. They already have brought at least one in to see its condition and what kind of maintenance it might need, Oman said. They’ll continue shopping for the right fit, he said.

The board Monday unanimously voted to let Oman pursue a used bus up to a certain amount the district preferred not to reveal until it gets quotes on the different options.

In other business, the board:

— Kept driver’s education fees for 2019 at $325 for North Dickinson students and $375 for those not enrolled in the school. They expect to have about 20 students this year, almost twice as many as last year, said Mike Roell, finance and athletic director.

— Authorized Oman to spend up to $5,000 from the district’s sinking fund on upgrading the electrical system in the shop classroom.

— Said yes to making Amanda Thoune a full-time support staff member. She is considered a versatile employee who can and does work in transportation and busing, technology, food service and payroll.
