Raises approved for officials in Felch Township

FELCH — Several Felch Township officials will receive pay increases in April if no serious objections are raised in the next 30 days.

The Felch Township Board approved the raises Tuesday for supervisor Robert Mattson, from $6,600 to $7,800 a year; clerk Darrell Oman, from $6,600 to $9,600 a year; and treasurer Marilyn Steinbrecher, from $7,200 to $9,600.

It will mark the first pay hike for the positions since 2011. All three were at pay levels below the average among their comparable Dickinson County officials, according to information Oman compiled for the meeting.

But the changes won’t take effect if 10 percent of the township’s voters protest through a petition in the next 30 days, which is the reason for the delay until April, which also is the start of the new fiscal year, Oman said.

The board also authorized an arrangement with North Dickinson County School District to have Felch buy a $5,000 to $6,000 salt spreader that will be attached to a school pickup truck for treating school and township sites. The vote was 3-1, with Mattson opposed because he thought other municipalities in the North Dickinson district should contribute as well.

In other business, the board:

— Introduced an ordinance that would prohibit retail marijuana establishments within the township, in the wake of Michigan’s vote to legalize recreational marijuana use. The township plans to have a public hearing before a final vote on the ordinance. Oman was asked as clerk to research how the township voted on the issue Nov. 6.

— Heard Trustee Greg Wille report the township’s Parks and Recreation Committee met Jan. 28 on a proposal by resident John Benzie to return the U.P. Hardball Classic to Felch, where it took place for 47 years before being shifted to Iron Mountain in 2018. The committee and Benzie have suggested a number of improvements that can be made on the field behind the community center in Felch to better accommodate the event, such as repairing field fencing. “He’s really heavy-duty into this ballgame,” Wille said of Benzie.
