Region under flood warning for Menominee River

IRON MOUNTAIN — A flood warning continues through early afternoon Wednesday for the Menominee River near Florence and Niagara, Wis., affecting Dickinson and Iron counties plus Florence County in Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service office in Green Bay, Wis.

The warning also includes the Menominee River near McAllister affecting Menominee and Marinette counties.

At 10 a.m. today, the Menominee River near Florence was at 9.7 feet; flood stage is 9 feet. Minor flooding is forecast, with the river expected to top 10 feet. The river won’t fall below flood stage until Wednesday afternoon.

At 10 feet, floodwaters reach a few homes and cottages along Runbers Road in Florence County.

At 8:15 a.m. today, the stage at Niagara was 13.1 feet; flood stage is 13.0 feet. The river level was forecast to reach nearly 14 feet by early this afternoon. At 13 feet, water approaches the parking lot of the Union Protestant Church in Niagara, according to the NWS.

The river may fall below flood stage by Thursday morning, NWS said.

River levels are running high after heavy rainfall over the weekend. Rain is likely again Wednesday, with up to a quarter of an inch expected and possibly more with thunderstorms, forecasters said.
