Two grass fires Sunday in area

IRON MOUNTAIN — A brush fire that spread across an estimated 26 acres in the Lake Antoine Road area Sunday is under control, according to the Iron Mountain Fire Department and Department of Natural Resources Crystal Falls Field Office.

Firefighters from both departments, as well as the Breitung Township Volunteer Fire Department, were called about 3:15 p.m. to a fire at 450 Rhodes Road in Iron Mountain.

The DNR declared the fire under control about 5:50 p.m. The IMFD returned to the station shortly after.

Though multiple structures were threatened, none appeared damaged, officials said.

Earlier Sunday, the DNR, Norway Field Office, and Breitung Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to a grass fire on the property of the Verso Paper Corp.’s Quinnesec mill.

The departments were called about 2:40 p.m., according to the Marquette DNR office. The fire threatened an estimated 15 acres.

The cause of both fires has not been determined.
