Helping the Honor Flight

Saturday event will fund veterans’ trips to Washington

VETERANS WHO ATTEND the U.P. Honor Flight Fundraiser on Saturday will receive a commemorative gift donated by Laborers’ International Union of North America Local 1329. In addition, they will be registered for a drawing to receive a U.S. flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol building on May 22, the same day as the most recent U.P. Honor Flight Mission XVI.  Displaying the flag are Jack Pemble, seated, U.S Army, Americol Division, Vietnam 1968-1970 and U.P. Honor Flight XVI veteran; and Brad Nelson, public affairs officer at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

IRON MOUNTAIN — A major fundraiser to support future U.P. Honor Flight missions to Washington D.C. will take place Saturday at Bob’s Country Bar in Niagara, Wis.

Doors will open at 11 a.m., with the music to start at noon and continue non-stop until midnight.

Organizers have secured local and regional groups offering a variety of music, including current and classic country; ’80s, ’90s and current rock; as well as bluegrass and rockabilly.

The entertainment schedule:

— Noon, Jessie McPherson

— 1:15 p.m., Alex Neville will perform the National Anthem

— 1:30 p.m., Suns of Memphis

— 3:15 p.m., Runaway Train

— 5 p.m., The Journeymen

— 6:45 p.m., 141 North

— 8:45 p.m., Sonic Circus

Other family activities will be available all ages, including bounce houses for children from noon to 6 p.m., Honor Flight representative Scott Lewellyn said.

Food and beverages will be available all day on the grounds.

Tickets will be sold for 10 cash drawing prizes, with first place of $1,000, Lewellyn said. Tickets are $10 each or three for $20.

Many individuals, organizations and businesses have donated prizes for the bucket drawings. Items include Green Bay Packer tickets, a grill, rifle, kayak, wooden lawn chair, several spa/salon packages, gift certificates, a scenic flight over the area for two, a wheelbarrow full of liquor, baskets that include $50 in lottery tickets and many more.

Bucket drawing tickets will be sold Saturday.

Drawings will be later in the evening, with winners of cash prizes and buckets posted. Winners do not need to be present to win.

They also will conduct 50-50s throughout the day.

“Everyone is invited to come and celebrate with us as we honor all veterans who have served our country since World War II,” Lewellyn said. “There will be a memorial table present at the fundraiser in honor and memory of all of our MIA and POW military veterans.”

All veterans who attend will receive a commemorative gift donated by Laborers’ International Union of North America Local 1329. In addition, all veterans in attendance will be registered in a drawing to receive the U.S. flag that was flown over the Capitol building May 22, the same day as the most recent U.P. Honor Flight Mission XVI to Washington D.C. 

Admission at the gate is $10 for a wristband.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs for this full day of entertainment. The event grounds will be covered with a massive tent for shade and cover in the case of rain.

Major event sponsors are Lake Shore Systems, Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home, Frog Country, Radio Now and The Mountain radio stations.
