FELCH TOWNSHIP -- A new disc golf course is ready for play at Norway Lake Park.
The nine-hole, 10-acre NorDisc Golf Course, designed by Ryan Wille of the Iron Mountain City Park Disc Golf Club, opened on Independence Day at the park on Norway Lake Road about 6 miles north of Felch.
Disc golf is a game in which players "tee off" by throwing plastic discs, like Frisbees, toward metal mesh baskets on poles that function as holes. As with golf, each hole on the course has a number of shots for par for keeping score.
Leon Grunland did considerable work clearing rock and stumps on the course, township Clerk Darrell Oman told the Felch Township Board on July 1.
The board tentatively agreed to pay Grunland for hydraulic fluid and fuel for the work; Grunland said he has yet to tally the actual costs of doing the work but quoted about $300 and will prepare a bill.
The township took control of the 16-acre Norway Lake Park from Dickinson County in 2016. It already this summer has had several days in which all 20 campsites with electricity have been filled, Oman said.
In other business, the board:
-- Heard that Jeff Anderson has re-sodded and made other improvements to the township's baseball diamond to host a baseball tournament Labor Day weekend. This is not, however, the annual U.P. Hardball Classic, also on Labor Day weekend, that had been in Felch for 47 years before it was shifted to Iron Mountain's Ranger Field in 2018.
-- Learned that Becky Pollack has accepted the Felch cemetery sexton position, which has been vacant for more than a year.
-- Agreed to allow the League of Michigan Bicyclists to make a rest stop at the community center July 13 during its ride through the Upper Peninsula. The group primarily plans to use the pavilion and parking lot outside the building for a catered lunch. The event could bring up to 280 people to the township.
-- Needs two Felch residents to serve on the township's Board of Review. Those interested should contact township Supervisor Bob Mattson at 906-280-6402. New members will be provided with training, Oman said.
-- Was told a farmers market is being planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the parking area at the community center. No start date has been set.
