Celebrate salsa at Harmony Arboretum Salsa Night

Harmony, Wis. — The popular Salsa Night is coming back to the Harmony Arboretum. The Extension offices of Marinette and Oconto counties and the Northern Lights Master Gardeners Volunteer Association invite all gardeners and salsa enthusiasts to the Harmony Arboretum Demonstration Gardens on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Starting at 6 pm, participants will have the opportunity to sample many different types of salsas, and learn the ins and outs of salsa-making, safe salsa preservation, and the growing of your own salsa ingredients.

Production and pest management tips for tomatoes, peppers, onions, and garlic will be the focus of a discussion led by UW-Madison Extension Horticulture Agent Scott Reuss.

Reuss particularly invites all attendees to bring any pest or problem samples that your produce is experiencing this year, so that you can get the problem diagnosed and form a management strategy for next year. Extension information regarding safe salsa recipes and preservation opportunities will also be presented, and then there will be an open question and answer session with Master Gardener Volunteers regarding herb production.

The entrance fee for this program is either a batch of your own salsa or a container of chips or crackers. If you bring salsa, please bring either the full recipe or at least the list of ingredients. All salsa entries will be eligible for judging by the attendees, with the Attendees Choice receiving a special award.

The Harmony Arboretum demonstration gardens are located on Marinette County Hwy. E, 1/2 mile south of Hwy. 64. All persons are welcome to attend.

If you have any questions, please contact Scott at the Marinette Extension office, 715-732-7510 or toll-free at 1-877-884-4408 or e-mail to sreuss@marinettecounty.com.
