Norway-Vulcan reviews school policies

NORWAY — The Norway-Vulcan Area School Board is considering policy updates with minor changes to attendance, curriculum development and school safety information, among other things.

The board will have a final reading of a number of the proposed changes Oct. 9, though a concern regarding crowdfunded items kept one policy from advancing.

Board member Brady Gustafson noted school districts in lower Michigan have redistributed property — such as laptops and calculators — bought by teachers with funds raised through civic crowdfunding platforms. Gustafson did not name any district specifically.

“I want to make sure that we give the teacher who raised the funds the use of that equipment in their classroom,” Gustafson said.

The board agreed to seek guidance on how to address the concern before moving forward with the policy.

In other recent business, the board:

— Raised the price of adult lunches from $3.85 to $4.

— Scheduled a Board Committee of the Whole meeting for 5:15 p.m. today. The meeting is intended as a casual discussion of board goals. No action will be taken on any topic.
