US 8 bridge reopening delayed to Oct. 4

NORWAY — The reopening of the U.S. 8 bridge over the Menominee River near Norway has been delayed until Oct. 4.

The detour currently in place was set to be lifted Friday, but the bridge is now expected to be reopened to traffic on Oct. 4, weather permitting, the Michigan Department of Transportation said.

Northbound and southbound U.S. 8 remains closed at the bridge. A posted detour remains in effect. Northbound U.S. 8 traffic is detoured via U.S. 141 through Niagara, Wis., and on to U.S. 2 near Quinnesec. The detour is reversed for southbound traffic. Access to the Menominee River will remain open on both sides of the bridge for the duration of the project.

MDOT and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are investing about $2.4 million to replace the bridge deck and railing and paint structural steel on the bridge over the Menominee River at the Michigan-Wisconsin state line. The project is behind schedule due to several construction operations that took longer to complete than originally anticipated.
