Crash in Iron County kills Phelps man Sunday

STAMBAUGH TOWNSHIP — A Phelps, Wis., man died Sunday in Iron County after the pickup truck he was driving went off the road and struck several trees, authorities said.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Iron Mountain post responded to the crash at 12:20 a.m. at the intersection of Federal Forest Highway 16 and Smokey Lake Road in Stambaugh Township.

The driver, 64-year-old Verne St. Pierre, was able to tell troopers he had fallen asleep at the wheel and ended up off the road, striking several trees, according to a MSP news release.

St. Pierre was transported to Aspirus Hospital in Iron River, where he later died from his injuries.

St. Pierre was wearing his seatbelt and alcohol is not believed to be a factor, according to the release.

Michigan State Police troopers were assisted by the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, West Iron County Fire Department, Iron County Search and Rescue, Aspirus EMS, Phelps EMS and Northland Towing.
