North Dickinson faces budget hit

FELCH TOWNSHIP — North Dickinson County School District could take an almost $13,000 hit due to one of the state budget vetoes by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Whitmer used her line-item veto powers to cut $947 million from the $59 billion state budget. That included money for isolated school districts that had provided $12,900 to North Dickinson, Finance Director Mike Roell told the school board Monday.

“For some reason, she (Whitmer) didn’t feel that was necessary,” Roell said.

While there is a chance the funding will be restored — bills already have been introduced or are in the works, including addressing the isolated districts — Roell said the district should be prepared that effort might not be successful, adding “it’s going to continue to be a challenge.”

In other action, the board:

— Authorized Darrell Oman, director of support services, to seek proposals on enclosing the metal roof area by the weight room. Snow now tends to blow off the roof and onto the sidewalk, creating ice “that is thick and almost impossible to remove,” Oman wrote in his report to the board. He will bring back plans and potential costs in November.

— Also allowed Oman and Superintendent/Principal Angel Inglese to advertise for a part-time temporary substitute support staff member. This has been a difficult position to keep filled, Oman explained, as it has irregular hours that depend on need.

— Approved a course catalog that lists the hundreds of Edmentum courses that can be taken online at North Dickinson.

— Appointed Felch Township resident William Cook to the open seat on the Forestry Commission.
