Woman dies after crash in IM

IRON MOUNTAIN — A 68-year-old Iron Mountain woman died this morning after a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 2 near Sixth Street in Iron Mountain.

It is believed the crash and fatality were the result of a pre-existing medical condition and not the collision, according to a news release from Iron Mountain Director of Police and Fire Services Ed Mattson.

Officers determined the woman was driving south on U.S. 2 just after midnight when she left the roadway and struck a utility pole guy-wire. The vehicle then spun out of control and crossed the roadway again before crashing into a garage, Mattson stated.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the woman died a short time later at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.

The official cause of death is yet to be determined by the Dickinson County medical examiner.

Officers were assisted by the Iron Mountain Fire Department, an accident investigator with the Michigan State Police and Beacon Ambulance Services.
