Meeting set on millage for Felch road repairs
FELCH TOWNSHIP — The Felch Township Board will have a special meeting Wednesday to work out final wording for two millages that could go on the March 10 presidential primary election ballot.
Along with renewal of the .5 mill — or 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable property value — levy for ambulance and rescue service shared with Breen and West Branch townships, the board is considering a new measure to help cover needed road repairs, especially on Metropolitan and Six Mile Lake roads.
Township officials first raised the possibility of a special millage dedicated to road work earlier this year. James Harris, managing director of the Dickinson County Road Commission, told the board in May that a .5 mill would generate about $16,500 annually for the township, 1 mill $33,284 and 2 mills an estimated $66,000.
The board is leaning toward placing the 1 mill levy before voters.
Harris recently estimated repaving a 4,035-feet section of Metropolitan Road from M-69 to Church Road leading up to Zion Lutheran Church would total $176,076, with the township and commission dividing the cost at $88,038 each because it is a primary route.
A half-mile stretch of Six Mile Lake Road from M-69 north would be an estimated $119,012 if done by contractors, but the township would be responsible for 75% of the cost, with the commission providing 25%, because it is classified as a local road.
The Road Commission already has a .5 mill levy from 2017 through 2021 that in 2018 accounted for about $321,511, or 5 percent, of its $7,137,957 in revenue. It will have a project selection meeting for the entire county in the second week of February.
The special board meeting will be 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Felch Township Community Center, W4243 M-69.
The board Dec. 2 also added William Cook to the township Board of Review, which is set to meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
