Norway schools to seek sinking fund millage
NORWAY — The Norway-Vulcan Area School Board on Wednesday approved language for a sinking fund millage to go on the March 10 presidential primary ballot.
The measure would not exceed 3 mills — or $3 per $1,000 of taxable property — over 10 years and could generate about $526,517 annually for construction or repairs of school buildings, security improvements and technology upgrades.
Most of the money would be used for a new heating control system for the school, Superintendent Louis Steigerwald said at a previous meeting.
The board originally aimed to have the millage on the Nov. 5 ballot but that was delayed due to a clerical paperwork error. Wednesday’s move meets a Dec. 17 deadline for the March 10 vote.
The board also tentatively scheduled a Friends of the Sinking Fund meeting for Jan. 8 after the regular school board meeting, although this meeting is not an official board function.
In other business, the board:
— Approved vendor e-Funds for Schools to handle electronic fund transfers for school lunch accounts. The transfers will cost parents $2.95 per $100.
— Authorized an agreement with the Norway-Vulcan Education Association for an early retirement program to be offered during the 2019-20 school year.
— Set a Jan. 6 meeting to nominate a candidate for a seat on the Michigan Association of School Boards and Jan. 20 for a committee of the whole meeting for strategic planning.
