Mary Slagle

NORWAY — Mary Slagle, a senior at Norway High School has been nominated for the volunteer of the year in the 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program.

She is the daughter of Tami Slagle and Tom Slagle of Norway.

This award recognizes outstanding community service by young Americans. By selecting Slagle as its top youth volunteer, Norway High School has advanced her application to the state-level for a chance to receive a $1,000 award and trip to Washington D.C.

Mary has hundreds of documented volunteer hours for numerous events throughout the community. One of her biggest events was the “Color Our School Pink” Campaign. There were many fundraisers held including selling T-shirts, pink footballs, and suckers to raise funds for our local Cancer Loan Closet. This event helped to empower youth for such a strong and emotional topic.

Slagle has also been very active as the Red Cross student blood drive coordinator and in Big Brothers/Big Sisters for the past three years.

“Volunteering has taught me teamwork, responsibility, and how to be a leader. It has had an extremely positive impact in all aspects of my life,” said Slagle. “Volunteering has become part of who I am, and I know that I will continue to give to others as long as I am able.”
