‘The Nutcracker’ to be performed
The Dickinson Ballet Company and Northern Michigan Dance Academy will present “The Nutcracker” at the Braumart Theatre in Iron Mountain, with performances set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, 1 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The classic ballet begins at the Stahlbaums’ annual Christmas party with Clara (Ina Holt) and her sister, Franziska (Courtney Erickson). After the mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer (Jacob Maxon) entertains the guests with life-size dolls that dance, he presents Clara with a special Nutcracker doll. During the night, Clara creeps back into the living room to find her Nutcracker, drifting back to sleep with the doll. Drosselmeyer then returns and casts a spell on the room, which brings the Nutcracker to life to battle giant mice and the evil Rat Queen (Sarah Kulas). When the Nutcracker is wounded saving Clara, Drosselmeyer transforms him to Clara’s handsome prince (Daniel Maki). The prince and Clara soon meet the Snow Queen and visit the land of Sweets and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Clara awakens in the living room on Christmas morning with her Nutcracker doll nearby and wonders if her adventure was real or only a dream. Some of the cast for “The Nutcracker” — from left, in back are Mary Cavagnetto as Snow, Madeline Yake as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Anja Kleiman as the Snow Queen and Sarah Kulas as Snow; in front are Ashley DeMay as Dew Drop Fairy, Natalia Brown filling in for Taylor DeMay as the Nutcracker and Courtney Erickson as Marzipan.
