Menominee man charged in death of Vulcan resident

KANE RICHARD

MENOMINEE — A Menominee man has been charged in connection with the death of 29-year-old Vulcan resident Derek Bryant in an Oct. 21 traffic collision in Menominee County’s Lake Township.

Kane Richard, 20, is charged with operating under the influence of drugs causing death and reckless driving causing death, both felonies punishable by up to 15 years in prison, according to a release from Menominee County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Rogg.

Richard reportedly disregarded a stop sign at the intersection of county roads 356 and 577 and crashed his pickup truck into a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban.

Bryant, a passenger in the Suburban, was ejected from the vehicle and died as a result of his injuries.

Richard was arrested after the crash and kept in custody at a medical facility while in critical condition, The Daily News previously reported.

An investigation was conducted by the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office, the Michigan State Police and the Menominee Police Department. The MSP Crime Laboratory analyzed Richard’s blood and found quantities of THC and Diazepam in his system, the release stated.

“Our charging decision is based on the available evidence and what charges we reasonably believe can be proved to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt at trial,” Rogg said.

Richard is due to be arraigned in 95-A District Court in Menominee March 4. A personal recognizance bond had previously been set at $50,000.

Richard is currently serving a 12-month sentence in the Menominee County Jail on unrelated convictions, according to the release.
