Shooting investigated in western Upper Peninsula

MARQUETTE — One man is in custody after allegedly shooting an Ontonagon man in Greenland Township Sunday morning.

At approximately 8:35 a.m., the Negaunee Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting that a male subject had been shot, a press release from the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post states.

The Ontonagon County Sheriff Department and MSP Wakefield Post responded to the incident.

The investigation revealed a 24-year-old male from Greenland Township had shot a 23-year-old male from the village of Ontonagon. The victim was transported to the Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital. He was later transferred to the Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

The suspect was located by area law enforcement and was taken into custody where he was lodged in the Ontonagon County Jail.

Cole Wascher, 24, of Greenland Township has since been charged with assault with intent to murder and felony firearm, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post. The crimes are punishable by up to life in prison.

MSP Wakefield and Iron Mountain Post, the Marquette Forensic Lab and Ontonagon Sheriff Department assisted with the investigation.
