A Menominee man accused of driving under the influence of drugs in a collision in Menominee County that killed a Vulcan resident waived arraignment Wednesday in Menominee.

Kane Richard, 20, is charged in the 95-A District Court with operating under the influence of drugs causing death and reckless driving causing death, both felonies punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

According to an earlier news release from Menominee County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Rogg, Richard reportedly disregarded a stop sign at the intersection of county roads 356 and 577 in Lake Township and crashed his pickup truck into a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban on Oct. 21.

Derek Bryant of Vulcan, 29, a passenger in the Suburban, was ejected from the vehicle and died from his injuries.

Richard was arrested after the crash and kept in custody at a medical facility while being treated for serious injuries, The Daily News previously reported.

The Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory found quantities of THC and Diazepam in Richard’s blood, Rogg stated. The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office, MSP and the Menominee Police Department also were involved in the investigation.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for March 16. Bond previously had been set at $50,000.

Richard is serving a 12-month sentence in the Menominee County Jail on unrelated convictions.
