Dickinson County has second death due to COVID-19

A second death in Dickinson County is being attributed to the COVID-19 virus, health officials said today.

The Dickinson-Iron District Health Department posted the death late this morning on its Facebook page but stated it would release no further information on the case.

In a news release, Dickinson County Healthcare System in Iron Mountain said the person had “pre-existing medical issues that were compromised by COVID-19” but also provided no other details.

This would be the sixth COVID-19-related death in the Upper Peninsula.

Also in the region, Menominee County has its first positive COVID-19 case. Public Health Delta and Menominee Counties was notified Thursday by the Bay Area Hospital of the presumptive positive test result. The individual is an adult female. PHDM is in the process of identifying and contacting people who have had close contact with the individual.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday afternoon reported 41 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Upper Peninsula, including five deaths. Those figures did not include the new case in Menominee County nor the Dickinson County death.

According to the MDHHS, Schoolcraft, Luce, Houghton and Chippewa counties each have a single case; Dickinson and Gogebic counties each have three cases and a death; Mackinac County has four cases; Delta County has nine cases and a death; and Marquette County has 18 cases and two deaths.

The MDHHS also separately lists prison inmates as positive in Luce and Chippewa counties.

Iron, Keweenaw, Baraga, Alger and Ontonagon counties still have no positive cases so far.

The MDHHS reported 1,158 new COVID-19 cases in the state Thursday, with a total of 21,504 to date. The state had 117 new deaths for a total of 1,158 to date.

Dickinson County Healthcare System had no new cases to report Thursday. So far, two county residents have tested positive at its facilities, with one man dying late April 2, along with three positives from other counties. DCHS has tested 87 people for COVID-19, with five positive, 64 negative and 18 results still pending.

In Wisconsin, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site by county showed three positive cases in Marinette County and two positive in Florence County, both over this past weekend. Wisconsin’s Iron County reported a death from coronavirus complications March 26. Forest County has yet to have a positive case with 22 tests done so far.
