IM School District seeks safety grant

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain School District has applied for a Michigan Competitive School Safety Grant.

Under the Michigan State Police program, districts can receive $50,000 per building and up to $250,000 for equipment and technology to improve school safety and security, Iron Mountain Superintendent Jerome Sardina told the school board at its April 13 meeting, conducted remotely online.

Schools that have not previously received a grant will be given priority. The district recently completed its safety plan.

In other recent business, the board:

— Learned the district’s Pride Awards will be suspended until social distancing requirements are lifted;

— Hired science teacher Jeff Christiansen as the drone team coach;

— Approved a contract with the Dickinson-Iron Community Services Agency, or DICSA, to temporarily use the North Elementary School kitchen for the Meals on Wheels program.
