Local results: Judges, county boards, BDP school issue vote

Judge Leon Stenz retained his circuit court seat in Florence and Forest counties while Jane Sequin, the current Marinette County court commissioner and register in probate, won a close race in the April 7 election to replace Circuit Court Branch 1 Judge David Miron in Marinette County.

Unofficial results were posted by county clerks after counting was delayed by court order until Monday in an election severely complicated by the coronavirus.

In the Florence-Forest judicial race, Stenz defeated challenger Robert A. Kennedy Jr. by a vote of 1,522 to 1,105 in Forest County and 686 to 674 in Florence County.

In Marinette County, Sequin edged attorney Mike Perry of Peshtigo, 5,391 votes to 5,112. Miron had announced earlier he was stepping down from the circuit court judgeship.

In contested county board races, two local incumbents were defeated.

In Florence County, Cynthia L. Nichols outpolled Holly Wahlstrom Stratton in District 3 in portions of Aurora and Commonwealth, 63 to 34.

Roger Allen unseated incumbent Gilbert Engel in Marinette County’s District 1 in the city of Niagara, 184 to 153.

In school district results, a referendum in the Beecher-Dunbar-Pembine School District to exceed the revenue limit by $575,000 a year for five years was approved 380 yes to 309 no. The referendum beginning with the 2020-2021 school year is for non-recurring purposes consisting of maintaining and enhancing educational programming, operational and maintenance expenses and technology updates.

In a contested school board race in the same district, challenger Mandy McLain defeated incumbent Lee Niven, 322 to 315

Three candidates were competing for two school board seats in the Goodman-Armstrong Creek district. The unofficial winners were Samantha Smith, 238 votes, and Kimberly Gudowicz, 209. Finishing third was incumbent David Ziolkowski, 160 votes.

In the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, Justice Dan Kelly prevailed over Jill Karofsky in Marinette County, 5,928 to 4,611, and in Florence County, 863 to 497. Karofsky was the winner statewide.

In the Democratic presidential primary, Joe Biden was the winner in Florence County with 331 votes, followed by Bernie Sanders, 117 votes. In Marinette County, it was 3,258 for Biden and 952 for Sanders.

In the Republican primary, President Donald Trump received 919 votes in Florence County and 6,023 in Marinette County.

Two county board districts in Florence County had no candidates on the ballot. Unofficial write-in results showed Matt Brunette getting the most support in District 10 with seven votes. In District 6, James Gehlhoff and Charles Kellstrom each received two write-in votes.
