Food drive organized for Saturday in Powers

POWERS — Nutter’s Sports Bar will host a food drive from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday to gather donations for those in need due to the COVID-19 situation.

The business at W3988 Second St. in Powers has remained open for takeout beer and pizza while adhering to Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive order by keeping the bar area shut down.

While open, they began accepting donations for delivery throughout Menominee County. Residents have responded by contributing food items, gift certificates to Fazer’s Foods grocery store in Spalding store and money.

Names also have been suggested for delivering boxes to those in need — not just canned goods but also fresh produce and household items such as toilet paper and laundry soap, said Gabriella Fleury, who runs Nutter’s Sports Bar with Shaun Knutter.

The business will have boxes set up Saturday for people to drop off items, along with bags available for those who might need to take food home.

In addition, the Delta County Salvation Army has been collecting recyclable can donations, using the funds to further help Upper Peninsula communities. The Salvation Army will be on hand Saturday with a van for any donated recyclable cans, which for now can’t be taken in for deposit.

The event will be outdoors to encourage safe practices and social distancing. The business has checked with local law enforcement to make sure the event is acceptable.

During the two-hour drive, a live band will play in Nutter’s parking lot so those who come in can enjoy the music as they pass through, sit in their vehicles to listen longer or just honk as they drive by, Fleury said.

“We feel this will be a safe way to provide encouragement and help to unite the community,” she said.
