UP virus count climbs

4 new Dickinson cases

Dickinson County has four new COVID-19 positives, local health officials reported Wednesday.

The Dickinson-Iron District Health Department posted on its Facebook page Wednesday afternoon that Dickinson County had reached 50 cases, but also upped the number of recoveries by six to 13.

Across the Upper Peninsula, the Michigan COVID-19 data site Wednesday listed three new positives in Delta County and one each in Marquette, Gogebic, Mackinac and Dickinson counties. The state’s Dickinson total was three fewer than the local count.

On the Wisconsin side of the region, the Vilas County Public Health Department on Wednesday raised its total to 54, seven more cases than Monday. The department stated on its Facebook page that positives have turned up throughout the county, in residents from teenage through late 80s.

In Wisconsin counties in the region, that state’s data site indicated eight new cases in Marinette County and one each in Iron and Vilas counties; the state also reduced Florence County’s total by one, to six cases.

For the Upper Peninsula, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services data site Wednesday had Keweenaw County

with two confirmed cases and one probable; Luce County with three confirmed cases; Baraga County, five confirmed cases; Ontonagon County, six confirmed and one probable; Alger County, seven confirmed cases and one probable; Schoolcraft County, 12 confirmed cases and one probable; Iron County, 17 confirmed cases and one death; Mackinac County, 20 confirmed cases and five probable; Chippewa County, 25 confirmed cases and 11 probable; Houghton County, 41 confirmed cases and seven probable; Dickinson County, 47 confirmed cases, one probable and two deaths; Delta County, 66 confirmed cases, 19 probable and three deaths; Gogebic County, 99 confirmed cases, six probable and a death; Menominee County, 102 confirmed cases and nine probable; and Marquette County, 133 confirmed cases, 13 probable and 11 deaths. The MDHHS also earlier separately had prison inmates as positive in Luce and Chippewa counties.

Using strictly the state figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Wednesday has had 587 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 18 deaths.

The MDHHS reported 657 confirmed new COVID-19 cases in Michigan on Wednesday for a total of 84,707 to date. The state had only two new deaths Wednesday for a total of 6,221.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Wednesday listed Marinette County with 350 cases and three deaths; Iron County 73 cases and one death; Forest County 59 cases and four deaths; Vilas County 40 cases; and Florence County six cases. There was no indication why the state numbers for Vilas County differ so much from the county’s total. As with the Michigan data, the state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin reported 884 new cases Wednesday for a total of 56,940 to date, according to the state DHS data site. The state had nine new COVID-19 deaths Wednesday to reach 970 to date.

According to the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department, Dickinson County as of Wednesday had 50 confirmed COVID-19 positives, with 13 recovered, two deaths and 35 cases still active.
