A year ago, Dickinson County's November rate was reported at 3.5%, while Iron County's was 3.8%.
"Jobless rates rose over the year in all 17 Michigan labor market regions with a median rate increase of 1.4 percentage points," said Wayne Rourke, associate director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives. The Detroit metro region exhibited the largest over-the-year gain of 5.4 percentage points, reporting a November 2020 rate of 8.9%.
The Upper Peninsula jobless rate ticked up just 0.1 percentage points since November 2019, rising to 4.2%. The rate was unchanged from October 2020.
The statewide unemployment rate in November was 6.3%, up from 5.7% in October and 3.2% in November 2019.
Michigan's leisure and hospitality industry displayed the largest job cut in November, down by 17,000 workers, Rourke said. Payroll jobs generally rose in retail trade, he added.
Over the year, Michigan nonfarm jobs dropped by 418,000, or 9.3%, due to the impact of the pandemic, Rourke said. Statewide, there were 19,000 fewer workers in the civilian labor force than a year ago, while the number of unemployed was up by 151,000.
The Upper Peninsula's civilian workforce total of 138,000 was down by 2,000 workers from October but up by 2,800 over the year. There were 5,900 U.P. workers who were unemployed in November, the same as in October, but 300 more than a year ago.
