Ice fisherman drowns in UP

MENOMINEE — A Stephenson man drowned Thursday after going through the ice on Shakey Lakes in Menominee County.

Lon Harrand, 67, reportedly had stopped at Shakey Lakes Park campground earlier in the day, seen others ice fishing and gone back home to get his gear.

The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office and first responders were called out about 7:47 p.m. after Harrand failed to come home and did not answer his cell phone, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. Family and friends went to the lakes, finding boot prints going onto the ice but none returning.

Ice rescuers reached where Harrand had fallen through the ice and were able to recover his body, the news release stated.

Others participating in the effort included ice rescue teams, Mellen Township Fire, Nadeau Township Fire, Wagner Fire, Marinette Fire and Hovercraft, Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Marinette County Dive Team, Brazeau Dive Team, drones from the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office and Vandermissen Aeronautical Solutions, Mid-County Rescue Squad and the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit.
