Michigan Tech to honor grads

HOUGHTON — Michigan Technological University is celebrating the accomplishments of nearly 700 undergraduate and graduate students who completed their degrees by the end of the fall 2020 semester.

Despite the lack of a formal commencement ceremony due to COVID-19 restrictions in place, more than 350 undergraduates and nearly 330 graduate students will be recognized Saturday.

Among the undergrads, 42 will graduate cum laude, 39 magna cum laude and 18 summa cum laude. Four individuals will receive multiple degrees.

In the Graduate School, there will be 53 doctorates awarded, 243 master of science degrees, 26 graduate certificates, 15 master of business administration degrees, nine master of forestry degrees, three master of geographic information science degrees, and one master of engineering degree.

Both the Air Force and Army ROTC squadrons will conduct virtual commissioning ceremonies. The Air Force ROTC ceremony will take place at 7:30 a.m. Saturday via Zoom. Three cadets will be commissioned as officers in the Air Force. The Army ROTC commissioning takes place at 9 a.m. via Zoom. A total of eight cadets will be commissioned as officers in the Army.

One of the highlights of Michigan Tech’s traditional commencement ceremony is a speech by a member of the graduating class. Even without a formal ceremony, the remarks by this year’s student speaker, Viasana Kumar, can be heard by her classmates and anyone else.

Kumar is from Chennai, in the southern part of India. She is graduating with a dual major in management information systems and marketing. Her remarks have been recorded and will be available on the Graduation Celebration website.

University President Rick Koubek congratulated MTU’s newest alumni.

“I wish to extend my heartiest congratulations to Michigan Tech’s winter 2020 graduates,” said Koubek. “We can’t wait to see the impact you will have on our world with your degree from Michigan Tech and wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.”

The Graduation Celebration website has information about the graduating class as well as links for graduates, their families and, friends, and the community. Graduates and alumni can share their favorite memories and view profiles created by the Class of 2020.
