Three new virus deaths reported in Marinette County

Marinette County has had three new virus-related deaths, Wisconsin health officials reported Thursday.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state’s COVID-19 data site for Thursday and Friday also listed 21 new confirmed cases in Marinette County, 17 in Vilas County, eight in Forest County and two in Iron County.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Friday had Marinette County with 3,476 confirmed cases, 317 probable cases and 42 deaths; Vilas County, 1,554 confirmed, 62 probable and 21 deaths, two probable deaths; Forest County, 824 confirmed, 59 probable and 22 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 411 confirmed, 107 probable and 13 deaths, 12 probable; and Florence County, 391 confirmed, 24 probable and 12 deaths. State numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin health officials on Friday reported slightly more than 1,500 new cases of the coronavirus, making up about 17.5% of the tests that were processed in the last day.

It’s the third time in the past week that the daily report has shown fewer than 2,000 positive tests.

Wisconsin added 2,799 new positives Thursday and 1,506 on Friday for a total of 467,899 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Wisconsin ranks 25th in the country for new cases per capita in the past two weeks. One in every 273 people in the state tested positive in the past week, the Johns Hopkins University study showed.

The state recorded 60 deaths Thursday and five Friday to reach 4,679. The death toll is the 30th highest per capita among all states at about 86 deaths per 100,000 people, according to The COVID Tracking Project.

The state had 56 more people hospitalized Friday because of the virus. A total of 1,243 people are currently being treated in medical facilities throughout the state, health officials said.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services did not update its coronavirus data site Thursday or Friday due to the Christmas holiday.
