Hostage situation in Norway ends with man’s arrest

NORWAY — A 33-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night after a hostage situation in Norway.

Police were called to the 600 block of 15th Avenue just after 10 p.m. on a report of a domestic violence incident, according to a news release from the Norway Police Department.

The man reportedly was armed with two knives and threatening a woman he had taken hostage, the release stated.

Officers attempted to negotiate with the man after gaining entry to the residence, but the man refused to negotiate or comply with commands, according to the release.

The Critical Incident Response Team arrived and also attempted to negotiate with the man, finally subduing him with non-lethal shotgun rounds after he refused, the release stated.

The woman was uninjured.

NPD and CIRT were assisted by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, North Alert EMS and Integrity Care EMS.
