North Dickinson to spend $97K on technology

FELCH TOWNSHIP — The North Dickinson County School District will invest almost $100,000 on new technology for its classes and staff.

The North Dickinson County School Board in February authorized spending $52,331 to have Digital Age Technologies Inc. of Davison, Mich., replace 13 classroom “smartboards,” which are interactive video screens that allow lessons and materials to be projected.

Other planned purchases include —

— 19 laptop computers for teachers, at a total cost not to exceed $19,000;

— 28 computers and monitors for the elementary school lab, cost $15,500;

— 10 computers and monitors for the high school/middle school library, at $5,500;

— Six computers and monitors for school staff and administration, at a total cost of $5,100.

The district will spend $97,431 on the purchases, to be paid out of the $118,950 in bond revenue, with $21,519 remaining, said Mike Roell, district finance/athletic director.

Voters in the district approved a 1 mill levy, or $1 per 1,000 in taxable property value, in August to help finance two new buses and technology upgrades and equipment over the next three years.

In other business, the board —

— Agreed to keep fees for driver’s education at $325 for North Dickinson students and $375 for outside the district.

— Added a work-study program to the course catalog after an area metal fabricator indicated they wanted to hire a North Dickinson County student. While the district will not solicit such arrangements, having the Work-Based Learning option will allow students to earn 0.5 credits per semester if they secure this kind of on-site training. The student must be in 11th or 12th grade and have at least a 2.0 grade-point average.

— Heard from Darrell Oman, director of support services, the district still is seeking a buyer for bus 12.

— Learned Jeannie Oman has resigned as Title 1 aide.

— Moved Eric Schimmel from At-Risk aide to Title 1 aide.
