Norway to hold hearing on marijuana ordinance

The Norway City Council on Monday had a second reading of an ordinance to opt into the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act.

While the state in 2018 approved allowing recreational marijuana sales, Norway citizens voted against the move, 641 no to 541 yes. The council cited that opposition in passing an ordinance in December 2018 to forbid marijuana businesses in Norway.

But the council revisited its decision Dec. 7, with Mayor Candy Brew, council members Jeff Muraro, Scott Popp and then-Council Member Jeremy Oja voting to amend.

The council on Monday set a workshop meeting for today to discuss details of the ordinance before a public hearing March 15.

In other business, the council:

— Amended a contract with Frank’s Logging extending the sale of timber harvested from 110 acres of land near the Sturgeon Falls Hydroelectric Facility in Norway to March 30, 2022. The council in August 2019 extended the contract to December 2020, but mill closures throughout Wisconsin have affected the logging industry. Revenue from the timber sale will go to the electric department budget.

— Appointed Popp as council representative to the City of Norway Zoning Board of Appeals.

— Passed a resolution designating April 30 as Arbor Day in the city. The National Arbor Day Foundation has designated Norway as a Tree City USA community since 2013.
