IRON MOUNTAIN -- A small cabin at the center of City Park will be rehabilitated, thanks to a $25,000 memorial fund contribution and the efforts of a local ski club.
In 2017, the Menominee Range Nordic Ski Club gained permission from the city to use the former "rangers cabin" at the park as a warming shack and youth ski league storage space.
However, it needs work, including new windows and a door, a fireplace insert and chimney repair, City Manager Jordan Stanchina said.
Recently, the August Lilja Trust committed $25,000 to the project, the city council learned Monday. With the donation, the ski club is prepared to complete the project in 2021.
The Lilja Trust Committee, chaired by Marsha Bonicatto, determined the upgrade was within the "beautification" restrictions of the will of the donor, Madge Lilja. Work is restricted to public property within the Iron Mountain city limits.
The cabin is adjacent to the club's ski trail and snowshoe trail at the park, noted Kyle Lindstrom, president.
In other action, the council:
-- Learned that a replacement bridge will be ordered for a partially damaged playground unit at City Park, with Friends of City Park expected to cover the estimated $5,000 cost.
-- Approved payment of annual membership dues of $1,525 to the Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Regional Commission. As a CUPPAD member, the city is entitled to 10 free hours of assistance per year and discounted charges beyond that for such activities as research, development support and technical assistance.
-- Approved an application for a charitable gaming license to allow the Friends of the Iron Mountain Downtown Development Authority to conduct raffles in conjunction with the Out to Lunch summer music program.
-- Reappointed Elsa Pontbriand and Holly DeGroot to four-year terms on the Downtown Development Authority.
-- Agreed to seek bids to replace a roof-mounted air conditioning unit at City Hall.
