Local virus cases decline; Iron County down to 4 active

Local health officials Thursday reported only one new confirmed COVID-19 positive apiece this past week in Dickinson and Iron counties, while the number of active cases continues to drop.

The Dickinson-Iron District Health Department’s Facebook post Thursday listed 11 more Dickinson County residents now classified as recovered from the virus since its last update June 17. Iron County had seven recoveries and now has only four active coronavirus cases.

The DIDHD had Dickinson County at 2,419 confirmed positives and 345 probable cases, with 2,666 recovered, 72 deaths and 26 cases still active. For Iron County, the agency had 988 confirmed cases and 71 probables, with 1,005 recovered, 50 deaths and four active cases.

Iron County dropped as low as three active cases March 15 before rising again after variant strains of the virus surfaced in both counties, reaching a high of 80 active cases May 13. Since that last low mark March 15, Iron County has added 120 new confirmed cases with four deaths.

Dickinson County dipped to 25 active cases March 12 before also trending up in April, with a peak of 219 active cases April 30. Since March 12, the county has had 277 more confirmed positives cases and four deaths.

The DIDHD announced earlier this month it will cut back to only one COVID-19 update per week as the pace of new coronavirus activity in the region continues to slow.

State data Thursday showed only two new confirmed virus positives in the Upper Peninsula, with one case each in Chippewa and Houghton counties.

Using only the figures from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ coronavirus website, the Upper Peninsula as of Thursday has had 20,071 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 440 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Thursday had Keweenaw County at 142 confirmed cases and 32 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 226 confirmed cases and 255 probable, four confirmed deaths and one probable death; Alger County, 323 confirmed, 195 probable and three deaths, four probable; Schoolcraft County, 354 confirmed cases and 84 probable, four deaths and one probable; Ontonagon County, 421 confirmed, 61 probable and 20 deaths, one probable; Mackinac County, 459 confirmed cases and 257 probable, three deaths; Baraga County, 694 confirmed cases, 126 probable and 38 deaths; Iron County, 984 confirmed cases and 69 probable, 43 deaths and 10 probable; Gogebic County, 1,043 confirmed cases and 362 probable, 23 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 1,088 confirmed cases and 1,417 probable, and 28 deaths, six probable; Menominee County, 1,795 confirmed cases, 331 probable and 41 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,410 confirmed cases and 343 probable, 59 deaths and 15 probable; Houghton County, 2,532 confirmed cases, 607 probable, 35 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 3,345 confirmed cases and 713 probable, 76 deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 4,255 confirmed cases, 822 probable and 62 deaths, one probable. State figures are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Thursday posted 153 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan for a total to date of 893,909. The state Thursday had 28 new deaths attributed to the virus — including 24 that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing — to reach 19,692.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site had no changes Thursday.

As in Michigan, state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin on Thursday added 116 new positives for a total of 612,445 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. The state recorded 12 new deaths Thursday to reach 7,273.
