Local health officials report possible virus exposure in Crystal Falls

Local health officials Tuesday advised of a possible COVID-19 exposure site in Iron County during an event Friday at the Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls.

An individual who later tested positive for the coronavirus was at the theater from 6 to 9 p.m., according to a news release from the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department.

Symptoms typically appear within two to 14 days of an exposure.

“We ask that if you visited the site, or have had close contact with someone who visited the site, and have or develop symptoms such as a cough, fever or shortness of breath that you call your health care provider and inform them of any potential exposure,” the news release stated.

State COVID-19 data Tuesday showed three new confirmed COVID-19 positives in Iron County, after the state added four more cases Friday.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ coronavirus website since the last update Friday also listed 10 new

confirmed positives in Gogebic County; six in Chippewa County; and one each in Dickinson, Delta and Ontonagon counties. The state did lower Menominee County’s deaths by one.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 20,148 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 442 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 142 confirmed cases and 32 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 226 confirmed cases and 255 probable, four confirmed deaths and one probable death; Alger County, 323 confirmed, 196 probable and three deaths, four probable; Schoolcraft County, 354 confirmed cases and 84 probable, four deaths and one probable; Ontonagon County, 423 confirmed, 61 probable and 20 deaths, one probable; Mackinac County, 459 confirmed cases and 256 probable, three deaths; Baraga County, 695 confirmed cases, 128 probable and 39 deaths; Iron County, 992 confirmed cases and 70 probable, 43 deaths and 10 probable; Gogebic County, 1,063 confirmed cases and 362 probable, 23 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 1,108 confirmed cases and 1,424 probable, and 28 deaths, six probable; Menominee County, 1,803 confirmed cases, 330 probable and 41 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,414 confirmed cases and 344 probable, 59 deaths and 15 probable; Houghton County, 2,536 confirmed cases, 607 probable, 35 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 3,346 confirmed cases and 714 probable, 76 deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 4,264 confirmed cases, 826 probable and 63 deaths, one probable. State figures are updated regularly but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Tuesday added 650 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan since its last update Friday for a total to date of 896,717. The state Tuesday had 31 new deaths attributed to the virus — including 27 that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing — to reach 19,832.

The state last week began posting new COVID data only twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Tuesday had three new confirmed positives in Marinette County, two in Florence County and one in both Vilas and Iron counties. The state added a death in Forest County but reduced Florence County’s toll by one.

The DHS COVID-19 data site Tuesday had Marinette County with 4,239 confirmed cases, 477 probable cases and 67 deaths, six probable deaths; Vilas County, 2,298 confirmed, 149 probable and 42 deaths, three probable; Forest County, 966 confirmed, 81 probable and 24 deaths, three probable; Iron County, 590 confirmed, 120 probable and 21 deaths, 20 probable; and Florence County, 456 confirmed, 55 probable and 13 deaths. As in Michigan, state numbers are updated regularly but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin on Tuesday had 458 new positives for a total of 614,057 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. The state recorded four new deaths Tuesday to reach 7,360.
