IRON RIVER -- Iron County authorities have released some further details on a fatal shooting by law enforcement in Iron River about a week ago.
An Iron County sheriff's deputy and an Iron River Police officer were called to an Iron River residence about 4:10 p.m. June 24 for a wellbeing check, according to a news release by Iron County Prosecuting Attorney Chad DeRouin.
"While on the scene the officers discharged their weapons, which resulted in the death of an individual in the home," the release stated.
No name or other information was provided on the person shot, who was pronounced dead at the site. The Iron County Reporter, quoting Michigan State Police Public Information Officer Lt. Derrick Carroll, said the person killed was a 45-year-old male. The body was sent to Grand Rapids for an autopsy last Friday, according to Carroll.
MSP detectives have been assigned to investigate, DeRouin stated in the news release.
"The investigation is still ongoing so I will not be releasing any further information at this time to protect the integrity of the investigation," DeRouin stated. "I understand the public's interest and the need for transparency; once I have the full investigation and have had time to thoroughly review everything further details will follow. Thank you for your patience."
