State: 144 new virus positives in UP in past two days

State data Friday showed the pace of COVID-19 activity escalating across the Upper Peninsula, with 144 new confirmed positives reported in the region in the past two days.

State and local data Friday also showed a new death in Menominee County attributed to the virus.

Gogebic County was the only one among the U.P.’s 15 counties without a new positive; its total instead was decreased by four.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website listed for the Upper Peninsula since Wednesday: 37 new confirmed positives in Delta County; 21 in Marquette County; 14 in Menominee County; 13 in Mackinac County; 11 in Chippewa County; 10 in Ontonagon County; nine in Baraga County; eight in Houghton County; six in Iron and Alger counties; three in Keweenaw County; and two each in Dickinson, Schoolcraft and Luce counties.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Friday has had 20,925 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 448 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Friday had Keweenaw County at 145 confirmed cases and 32 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 233 confirmed cases and 261 probable, four confirmed deaths and one probable death; Alger County, 332 confirmed, 204 probable and three deaths, four probable; Schoolcraft County, 371 confirmed cases and 94 probable, four deaths and one probable; Ontonagon County, 448 confirmed, 63 probable and 21 deaths, one probable; Mackinac County, 488 confirmed cases and 265 probable, three deaths; Baraga County, 718 confirmed cases, 130 probable and 40 deaths; Iron County, 1,021 confirmed cases and 73 probable, 43 deaths and 10 probable; Gogebic County, 1,135 confirmed cases and 370 probable, 24 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 1,155 confirmed cases and 1,155 probable, and 29 deaths, five probable; Menominee County, 1,887 confirmed cases, 393 probable and 42 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,468 confirmed cases and 399 probable, 59 deaths and 15 probable; Houghton County, 2,623 confirmed cases, 622 probable, 35 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 3,573 confirmed cases and 753 probable, 76 deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 4,328 confirmed cases, 860 probable and 64 deaths, one probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Friday had 4,197 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan since Wednesday, or an average of about 2,098 per day for the two days, for a total to date of 929,574. The state Friday added 37 deaths attributed to the virus — including 13 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review — to reach 20,076.

The state now provides updated COVID-19 figures on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Friday had eight new confirmed positives in Marinette County, four each in Forest and Vilas counties and two in Iron County

The DHS COVID-19 data site Friday had Marinette County with 4,369 confirmed cases, 540 probable cases and 68 deaths, seven probable deaths; Vilas County, 2,356 confirmed, 154 probable and 42 deaths, three probable; Forest County, 1,018 confirmed, 87 probable and 24 deaths, three probable; Iron County, 611 confirmed, 121 probable and 21 deaths, 21 probable; and Florence County, 460 confirmed, 59 probable and 13 deaths.

Wisconsin added 1,584 new positives Friday for a total of 644,554 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state to date. The state recorded 13 deaths Friday to reach 7,516.
