Teen injured when moped hit flown to hospital in Milwaukee

BREITUNG TOWNSHIP — A 15-year-old Dickinson County boy was flown to a Milwaukee hospital with serious injuries after a pickup truck struck the moped he was operating Wednesday in East Kingsford.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office released new details on the crash Wednesday at the intersection of East Breitung Avenue and Campbell Street in Breitung Township.

Deputies were called to the crash at about 7:55 a.m. after the teenager, who was westbound on Breitung Avenue, was struck and thrown from the moped as the 82-year-old Wisconsin woman driving the truck turned left onto the avenue, according to a news release from Undersheriff Scott Metras.

Both drivers were transported to the Dickinson County Healthcare System. The teen later was transferred by helicopter to the Children’s Wisconsin-Milwaukee Hospital, Metras stated.

The crash remains under investigation and will be reviewed by the sheriff’s office before any citations and charges are issued, according to Metras.

Deputies were assisted by Kingsford Public Safety, the Michigan State Police, Breitung Township Volunteer Fire Department, Dickinson County Road Commission and Integrity Care EMS.
