State data: New UP virus cases appear in decline

State data Monday gave some signs the COVID-19 surge in the Upper Peninsula may be leveling off, with 10 new confirmed positives in both Dickinson and Menominee counties and seven in Iron County since Friday.

The total number of confirmed cases added in the U.P. on Monday for the three days since Friday was roughly 100 fewer than the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website had shown Friday for a two-day stretch.

Across the border, Wisconsin data had 45 more confirmed cases in Marinette County, while Florence County reported its second death blamed on the virus in a week’s span after going several months without a fatality.

The Florence County Health Department said the person was older than 65 and not vaccinated but released no further information “to protect the privacy of the individual and family.”
