IRON MOUNTAIN — Area children have the opportunity to get some extra mileage out of their costumes this Halloween season.
Many area churches, schools and businesses have planned family-friendly trick-or-trick events and activities. They include:
— Children, as well as adults, once again will be able to enjoy the Haunted Barn at the Dickinson County Fairgrounds in Norway. The fifth-annual haunted house will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The haunted house is now in the top level of the exhibition building. This year, they will feature some new scenes, hayrides, bonfire and a children’s maze. Admission is $5.
— Take a ride to 5003 U.S. 2 west of Florence, Wis., to view an amazing lightshow and haunted house. Attendees can drive through the homeowners’ property and tune the radio to 95.9 FM to hear music that synchs with the light show. The free attraction is open from dusk to 10 p.m. daily through Halloween.
— Dickinson County Healthcare System will host its annual Trunk or Treat event from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Everyone is welcome to this safe, fun drive-through event for kids.
Participants are asked to enter near the emergency department entrance and continue driving directly behind the hospital. Children will be greeted by DCHS staff with Halloween treats. Vehicles then can proceed to the medical building parking lot to exit.
— The 16th-annual Howling Halloween Party for Kids is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Breitung Avenue in Kingsford. The party is free and for ages 10 and younger. All children must be accompanied by an adult. There will be treat bags, lunch, carnival games and crafts. Children are invited to wear their costumes. This year will feature Mischief & Magic balloon animals and face painting.
The Howling Halloween Party for Kids is a “Make A Difference Day” project sponsored by RSVP of the Dickinson-Iron Community Services Agency.
— Mansfield Township residents, family and friends of Mansfield are invited to trick or treat — costumes not required — from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Mansfield Township Hall. The Wicked Witch of the West, along with her ghoulish assistant, will hand out treat bags from the hall steps. This event will replace the usual Halloween party due to the continued risk of COVID-19. All are welcome, including adults, who often seem to have just as much fun at Mansfield parties as the kids.
— Area children can Trunk or Treat at the Florence Elementary School in Florence, Wis., from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday before going door-to-door in the community.
— Kids are invited to give their Halloween costumes a test run at the Trunk or Treat event from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Quinnesec, on the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Bluff Street. There will be food, prizes and more.
— Halloween Trunk or Treat fun will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Strong Tower Church, 614 Carpenter Ave. in Iron Mountain. Food, candy and hot chocolate will be available. The event is free of charge and everyone is welcome.
— Breitung Township Fire Department will host an open house during trick or treat hours from 4 to 7 p.m. at the fire station in Quinnesec. They will have kids games, candy, fire truck tours, extinguisher training, cocoa and cider and coffee.
— Grace Covenant and First Lutheran churches have teamed up to offer a Trunk or Treat and floating lantern event from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Grace Covenant Church at 316 Jasper St., the former Stambaugh part of Iron River. Community families are invited to trick-or-treat around the parking lot among the variety of decorated car and truck trunks that will distribute candy.
There will be a few changes to the event from years past to take precautions against spreading illness. This will be an outdoor event only this year, with the decorated trunks, music and firepits. A new offering this year is a time of prayer and releasing of floating, biodegradable lanterns at 6:30 p.m.
— First Covenant Church, 125 E. H St. in Iron Mountain, also plans a Trunk or Treat event from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Families are invited to travel between decorated cars for candy.
— A Halloween party is planned at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Amasa Museum garage, hosted by the Hematite Fire Department and the Amasa Museum. The event will include a costume contest with prizes for first through third, plus cupcakes and candy bars. A funeral for the Amasa Hotel also is slated.
