Exhibit ‘thread’ at Bay College

A piece of artwork by Lisa Colwell that is part of the exhibition “thread” in the Hartwig Gallery on the Bay College campus in Escanaba.

ESCANABA — Bay College is featuring the exhibition, “thread,” with artwork by Lisa Colwell, in the Hartwig Gallery through Dec. 10.

Colwell was born and raised in metro Detroit and lived in the city for nearly 30 years, where she managed, curated and exhibited at many galleries.

Colwell started her artistic career as a solo art performer in 1991, moving to Phoenix, Ariz. She co-owned Gallery X, which hosted visual, sound, and performance art. In 1993 she moved back to Detroit; she continued her performance art as well as exhibiting her artwork. Colwell’s work includes performance art, video art, paintings, sculptures and works with sound.

She currently lives in Marquette, where she has been developing a body of work with fiber. Her current work is called, “thread.” She works with textile fibers in an artistic format that allows her to explore the relationship between movement and constraint.

“I create a union of string and shape, cultivating a vibrant and unique visual experience,” she explained. “‘thread’ is highly influenced by my love of geometric pattern, Art Deco, Korean and Japanese motifs. Initially, I began as a performance artist and painter, but am now combining my experience of more than 30 years as an artist and curator to create ‘thread.'”
